There was never a doubt about one teams winning – it was for the team from the Land of the Pharaohs. Constituting of both the finalist in the individual event the finals between Egypt and Hong Kong China turned out to be a one sided affair.

India overcame their first real test, their superior skill-based game  coming in handy against the Canadians in the quarterfinals of the World Junior Squash Girls’ Team Championship at the Indian Squash Academy here on Thursday.

“Something to Smile About”

Hong Kong, who beat New Zealand 3-0 in their last-eight tie, await the second-seeded hosts in the final-four, while Egypt take on the Unites States in the first semifinal on Friday. The Egyptians extended their untested run in the championship, showing the door to Malaysia rather unceremoniously, routing them 3-0, with their top-three players – Heba el Torky, Nour el Sherbini and Nour el Tayeb taking less than an hour to finish their three matches.

Meanwhile, US came from behind against England to win the quarterfinal tie 2-1. Amanda Sobhy, the US No 2, lost the first match to Kimberley Hay in three games. However, the Americans rallied back in fine style, with Olivia Blatchford and Julie Cerullo easing their way past the English players, who were looking average most of the time.

The Indians, on the other hand, started off with a stutter against the fourth-seeded Canadians.

Anwesha Reddy played the opening encounter and was matching Samantha Cornett point-for-point in the opening exchanges, with both players looking nervous.

However, Cornett was the steadier of the two and won the first game, while Anwesha took the second and was cruising 6-1 in the third before losing the range of her off-the-wall winners, while her opponent continued with her steady hitting to take the match and make it 1-0 for the Canadians.

Dipika Pallikal, the India No 1, did her part in the second match. Laura Gemmel’s elegant game was not good enough for a win but Dipika sure had to hurry her shots, especially in the opening game which she won 11-8. That was as close Gemmel would get in the match as the second and third games were easily killed off by Dipika to take the tie to the decider.

The pressure was on Surbhi Misra now as she took on Jennifer Pelletier. The wiry Canadian looked fitter and faster on court but the Indian proved looks could be deceptive. Surbhi won the opener in a tie-break and then took a 2-0 lead, winning the second game in no time. But then she lost her concentration for a brief period and that was enough for Pelletier to capture the third.

Quarter Final Stage @ World Team Event

No quarter given

India Blank England To Set Up Canada Clash In Last Eight (This content to this post have been picked up from e-paper of the Times of India – Chennai Edition)

Chennai: There will not be any second chances from now on at the World Junior Squash Girls’ Team Championships. The preliminary league phase is over and from Thursday the knockouts begin with the quarterfinals at the Indian Squash Academy here.

Top seeds Egypt and hosts India topped their pools; USA stunned Canada to advance as winners from Pool D while Hong Kong routed a lacklustre and under-performing Malaysia in their final tie to reach the quarterfinals as the top team from Pool C on Wednesday.

India, the second seeds, blanked England 3-0 in their final Pool B encounter.

India No 3 Surbhi Misra gave hosts the headstart with a straight-games win over Kimberley Hay while Dipika Pallikal closed the affair, beating English No 1 Millie Tomlinson, again in straight games.

Anaka Alankamony finished the rout, beating Julianne Courtice in the third match of the tie.

The untested Indians are likely to face the heat as they will be meeting stronger opponents in the knockouts. The hosts take on Canada in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

The Canadians, seeded fourth, went down to fifth seeded US in their final Pool D encounter. The clash of the North Americans was evenly matched, though the Canadians were the higher ranked team.

Amanda Sobhy, the American No 2 set things in motion by beating Samantha Cornett in the opening match. However, Canadian No 1 Laura Gemmel brought things back to level terms, beating Olivia Blatchford in the second match.

But in the decider Julie Cerullo beat Jennifer Pelletier in three games to hand US a 2-1 victory and a date with England in the quarters.

Egyptian girls were in the zone on Wednesday. Nour el Sherbini danced her way through, Heba el Torky was in a hurry, while Nouran el Torky had a small glitch in between, but still managed to win in four games, to hand the top seeds a 3-0 victory in their final pool tie against New Zealand.

Egypt will now take on Malaysia in the last-eight of the event. The Asian champions was forced into this predicament of taking on the pre-tournament favourites after an ordinary performance, by their standards, against Hong Kong, losing to the lower-ranked team 0-3 in the Group C game. Meanwhile Hong Kong will take on New Zealand in their next match.

Unseeded Egyptian 13 year old Nour El Sherbini continued her fine form in the Final to defeat fellow country women Nour El Tayeb ranked 4th in the championship. Nour continued upsetting higher ranked players and played her natural game to upset the much fancied Tayeb who had got better of hot favourite and top seed Dipika Pallikal in the Semi-finals yesterday.

Sherbini required little over half an hour and four games to achieve what no other Junior Men or Women player has achieved so far a World Championship title at the tender age of 13 years. Sherbini won 5/11. 11/7, 11/6, 11/5.

The Mens Finals saw Mohammed El Shorbagy of Egypt seeded No. 1 beat No. 2 seed Ivan Yuen of Malaysia in three straight games in a match that was contested well in only the first two games. The last game literally turned out to be a service game for Shorbagy who finally won the match in 36 minuets 11/9, 12/10, 11/2
