Indian National Champion Saurav Ghosal did what Saurav Ganguly used to do at the Eden Gardens Kolkata not so long ago. Ghosal, who looks younger by atleast 5 years because of his new hair-cut, did put his strategy in place to cut Top Seeds and World No 10 Adrian Grants journey into the semi-finals. In a match that saw Ghosal match is higher ranked opponent both in craft, fitness and temprament . Saurav had planned not to let Grant settle into any kind of rythymn and this is exactly what he did upsetting Grant in a match that lasted almost 90 minutes 8-11, 15-13, 11-5 & 11-7.
This confirmed his place in the semi-finals where he now plays Mohamed El Shorbagy of Egypt who beat World No. 19 and recently crowned Chennai Open Champion Malaysian – Ong Beng Hee in a match that swung both ways until the last game where the young and Chrismatic Shorbagy nailed the Malaysian. The Final scores were 11-6, 6-11, 11-6, 9-11 & 11-9.
The lower half was not as fiercly contested. It was the turn of Tarek Momen to stamp his class over another Malaysian Azlan Iskander whom he beat 11-7, 11-9 & 11-6. While Cameron Pilley of Australia got the better of Jonathan Kemp from England 12-10, 11-9 & 11-6.
